Tra Que Herb Village, nearly 400 years old, located in Hoi An, has been honored as the Best Tourist Village in the World.

The World Tourism Organization has just announced that Tra Que Herb Village in Hoi An is the second village in Vietnam to be listed in the “Best Tourist Villages in the World” list. The ceremony to receive this prestigious title is scheduled to be held in Hoi An City in mid-December.

Introduction to Tra Que Herb Village

Located along the peaceful Co Co River is the lush Tra Que Herb Village. Situated about 3 kilometers northeast of Hoi An’s city center, the village spans an area of 40 hectares. The villagers practice crop rotation and intercropping, growing more than 20 different types of leafy vegetables and herbs. It is considered the largest vegetable garden in the Quang Nam – Da Nang area. The herbs are cultivated across the 40-hectare land, with each household allocated land based on its population. Families divide the land into small plots and grow different types of vegetables in succession, supplying local restaurants, hotels in Da Nang, and Hoi An, and also large supermarkets.

Tra Que Herb Village has a history of over 300 years. In the beginning, the village grew many varieties of aromatic herbs, one of which was called “Nhự Quế,” known for its cinnamon-like fragrance. In the 19th century, King Gia Long visited the village, was impressed by the taste and aroma of the herbs, and named the village “Tra Que,” a name that has been passed down through generations to this day.

On April 4, 2022, Tra Que Herb Village was officially recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism. Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination, attracting many visitors both from within Vietnam and abroad. The village is open daily, with an entrance fee of just 35,000 VND per person, which includes all activities and experiences in the village.

Since 2020, ticket sales and investment management have been transferred to a tourism management organization in Hoi An. Each year, Tra Que Herb Village attracts tens of thousands of visitors, with annual ticket sales ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 tickets. Visitors to the village can directly participate in planting herbs with local farmers and enjoy various drinks and dishes made from locally grown herbs.
